Belgian Finance Ministry's 2025 Report Questioned for Over‑Optimistic Claims

The Federal Public Service Finance (FOD Financiën) released its 2025 annual report, accompanied by a press statement that praised progress in tax simplification, citizen service and the fight against tax fraud. Vice‑prime minister and finance minister Jan Jambon highlighted these achievements as evidence of the essential role of taxes in funding public services.

The National Union of Public Employees (NUOD) immediately challenged the report, arguing that the statements do not match everyday reality. The union points to persistent staff shortages, rising workloads, ongoing reorganisations, and limited capacity to detect fraud. It also notes that services are under pressure and that the claimed improvements in simplification and citizen assistance are not reflected in the experience of employees. NUOD plans to publish a detailed analysis after the summer holidays.

The dispute underscores a gap between the ministry’s optimistic portrayal of its performance and the concerns raised by public‑sector workers about operational challenges within the finance department.
