Belgian heatwave raises serious risk for dogs
During the current Belgian heatwave, temperatures are climbing to 35 °C and paved surfaces can reach 60 °C, creating a high risk of heat‑related injury for dogs. Experts advise owners to avoid walks on the hottest days and to limit any outings to early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Dogs should always have access to fresh water, but ice‑cold water can cause stomach problems, so plain cool water is recommended. Signs of dehydration include slowed movement, reduced energy, a dry nose, and lower water intake; owners should monitor these symptoms and consult a veterinarian if needed. Breeds with flat faces, thick coats, respiratory or heart conditions, as well as puppies, seniors, and overweight dogs are especially vulnerable. When walks are not possible, mental stimulation and cooling treats such as frozen toys or ice‑cube treats can help keep pets safe.
