Belgian municipalities adopt dimmed street lighting policy

Several Belgian municipalities, including Lennik, Dilbeek, Liedekerke, Ternat, and Denderleeuw, are implementing a new public lighting policy. Moving away from the 'energy-less nights' system used since the 2022-2023 energy crisis—where lights were completely switched off between midnight and 5:00 AM—these towns will transition to a dimmed lighting regime.

Following a policy vision from Fluvius, the lights will remain on throughout the night but at a reduced intensity. In Dilbeek, for example, lighting will be dimmed to 30 percent of its maximum brightness starting at 10:00 PM. This change aims to balance energy conservation with public safety and the sense of security for residents traveling at night.

The new regulations are set to be fully operational by the transition to winter time in late October. The municipalities are also continuing efforts to upgrade to energy-efficient LED lighting to further reduce consumption.
