Belgian municipalities implement measures against property neglect

Local authorities in Belgium are implementing measures to combat the neglect of vacant land and commercial spaces.

In Wuustwezel, the local government has introduced a specific regulation for the registration and taxation of neglected plots. This initiative aims to encourage owners to maintain their property and prevent the nuisance caused by long-term neglect, such as overgrowth, waste accumulation, or decaying structures. Mayor Dieter Wouters stated that the goal is to provide a framework to act when land is not maintained, prompting owners to restore their property rather than simply collecting taxes.

In Damme, the municipality is addressing the issue of vacant and neglected commercial spaces. Following Flemish decrees, the city is implementing levies on such properties while offering subsidies for projects that revitalize abandoned sites. An extract of the registered commercial spaces will be made available for public inspection in October 2026 to ensure transparency regarding the inventory of neglected business premises.
