Belgian municipalities introduce new animal welfare measures

Local governments in Belgium are introducing new measures to improve animal welfare. In Herzele, council member Joshua D’Hondt has proposed a local heat plan to protect livestock, pets, and wildlife from extreme temperatures. The proposal highlights that heat stress can occur in cattle at 20 degrees Celsius and in pigs at 26 degrees Celsius, potentially leading to exhaustion, immune system issues, and heart failure.

In Zottegem, the municipal council has approved a proposal by the Vooruit party to implement a temporary ban on animal ownership for those found guilty of animal abuse or neglect. This measure aims to prevent owners from acquiring new animals immediately after a seizure occurs while awaiting judicial rulings, a loophole that currently allows for repeated instances of animal suffering.
