Belgian municipalities repurpose former religious sites for housing

Municipalities in Belgium are moving forward with residential redevelopment projects on former religious sites. In Pelt, the local council has approved the sale of the former Holheide church grounds, covering 5,357 square meters. The site is intended for a new housing project that aims to provide between 30 and 40 diverse and affordable residential units, catering to singles, young families, and new family structures.

In Olen, an environmental permit has been granted for the redevelopment of the Sint-Jozef-Olen rectory. The project, managed by the housing company LeefGoed, will transform the site into a social cohousing project for seniors. The development will include seven residential units spread across the existing rectory and a newly constructed pavilion, combining heritage preservation with shared communal spaces.

Both projects emphasize the integration of green spaces and the strengthening of local community cores through sustainable and compact housing solutions.
