Belgian PM Bart De Wever calls for at least €7 bn in extra savings, avoids committing to exact amount

Prime Minister Bart De Wever told parliament that Belgium must undertake a new round of federal savings, targeting at least €7 billion by the national holiday to comply with European spending rules. He declined to specify an exact figure, noting that the amount is essential for long‑term financial stability.

Financial experts, including National Bank Governor Pierre Wunsch, warned that cuts could need to reach €11 billion to maintain investor confidence. Vice‑Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot also advocated a €7 billion reduction before the summer. De Wever responded skeptically to a wealth‑tax proposal from Les Engagés, which suggested a 0.3% levy on the liquid assets of the richest 5% of the population, emphasizing the need for coalition consensus rather than rigid tax limits.
