Belgian political leaders clash over budget and taxation

Belgian political leaders are intensifying their positions ahead of critical autumn budget negotiations. Georges-Louis Bouchez, chairman of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR), has signaled a firm stance against new taxes, proposing instead to achieve 17 billion euros through savings and reforms.

Simultaneously, Tom Van Grieken, chairman of Vlaams Belang, has voiced strong opposition to potential VAT increases. He argued that additional taxation is unacceptable given Belgium's already high tax burden and warned that such moves would increase labor costs via the wage index. To address the projected budget deficit, Van Grieken suggested focusing on expenditure cuts, specifically targeting government subsidies, asylum seeker reception costs, and climate-related policies.
