Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever warns of Trump reaction after Belgium's 4‑1 World Cup win over USA

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he would not bring up Belgium’s 4‑1 victory over the United States at the World Cup unless President Donald Trump mentions it first, adding that the president “has a reputation for reacting sharply to things he doesn’t like.”

The win followed a controversial decision by FIFA to suspend the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun after Trump personally urged FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red‑card ruling that had kept the player out of a previous match. FIFA later reinstated the suspension, prompting criticism from UEFA and other football bodies. Players mocked Trump during Belgium’s celebration, and the Belgian football federation considered legal action over the episode.

De Wever told Flemish broadcaster VRT, “Ich werde nicht von mir aus anfangen, darüber zu reden,” indicating he would monitor any comment from Trump before responding.
