Belgian supermarket prices see slight decrease in August

An analysis by consumer organization Testaankoop reveals that supermarket prices in Belgium saw a slight decrease in August compared to the previous year. The study reported a supermarket inflation rate of -0.56 percent, meaning the investigated basket of goods was marginally cheaper on average.

Significant price drops were noted in specific categories, particularly fruits and vegetables. Notable decreases include ketchup (15 percent), conference pears (13 percent), grey shrimp (11 percent), cauliflower (9 percent), and soy milk (8 percent). Fish products also saw an average decrease of 2 percent.

Despite these recent declines, grocery prices remain significantly higher than in previous years. Since January 2022, the investigated basket has become 30.5 percent more expensive on average, with groceries specifically rising by approximately 35 percent and dairy products by 32 percent.
