Belgian towns open free primary summer schools for language and math

The municipality of Duffel reopened its free summer school for primary pupils from 3 to 14 August, offering 50 children extra practice in language and mathematics. The programme, now in its seventh year, runs in the local school ’t Kofschip and includes afternoon sports and recreational activities. Duffel’s school was selected as a pilot by Leerpunt to test new Flemish language‑learning materials.

In neighbouring Liedekerke, the Warande summer school celebrated its 19th edition, providing a free ten‑day language camp for about 50 children referred by local school care coordinators. For the second consecutive year, the primary school De Bij organised its own summer school for its pupils, accommodating up to 65 students. Director Stanny De Block said the school‑based programme allows closer monitoring of learners, many of whom come from the Brussels area where Dutch is not the home language. Schepen Johnny De Brabanter highlighted the focus on Dutch language and maths in the mornings, with sport, play and culture in the afternoons.
