In response, the Federal Public Service Home Affairs has activated the 1722 helpline to manage non-emergency requests for fire department assistance regarding storm and water damage.

Citizens are advised to use the digital portal at www.1722.be for the most direct way to request help, as digital applications go directly to the fire services. While the 1722 phone number is available for non-life-threatening situations, calls are handled by 112 emergency operators on separate lines to ensure that life-threatening emergencies, such as fires or medical crises, remain the top priority.

Authorities urge the public to use 112 only for life-threatening situations. During periods of high demand, fire services will prioritize cases involving immediate danger to life and ask for patience from those waiting for assistance.
