Portugal, Switzerland and Belgium advance to World Cup round of 16 after round‑of‑32 wins

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 round‑of‑32, Portugal defeated Croatia 2–1. Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot, becoming the oldest player (41 years, 147 days) to appear in a knockout match and the oldest scorer in such a game. Gonçalo Ramos added the winner in added injury time, sending Portugal to the round of 16 while Croatia’s campaign ended.

Switzerland earned a 2–0 victory over Algeria. Brill Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Dan Ndoye doubled the lead shortly after the break, securing Switzerland’s place in the last 16.

Belgium stunned Senegal 3–2 after extra time. An on‑field clash between captain Romelu Trosard and midfielder Yūri Tielemans preceded a dramatic comeback: Trosard’s cross set up Tielemans’ equaliser in the 89th minute, and Tielemans later converted a penalty in the 125th minute to clinch the win, delivering Belgium a historic knockout‑stage triumph.
