Belgium and La Réunion new car registrations fall as EVs and hybrids capture market share
In July 2026 Belgium’s new passenger‑car registrations dropped 7.4% to 29,274 units, with a cumulative decline of 2.4% for the first seven months. Professional buyers accounted for over 58% of registrations, boosting the electric‑vehicle share to 42.9%, while plug‑in hybrids held 24.3% and gasoline cars 23.6%. Two‑wheel motorised vehicles fell 3.7% to 3,029 units, and light commercial vehicle registrations slipped 17.2% month‑on‑month, though still above historic July averages.
On the French overseas department of La Réunion, new vehicle registrations also fell, with 11,722 units in July 2026, a 5.37% decrease from the previous year. Hybrid models now represent 50.26% of July sales, up from 44.18% a year earlier, and fully electric cars grew to 14.16% of the market. Thermal‑engine vehicles declined to 33.04%. Renault leads the electric segment with 527 registrations, outpacing competitors such as Skoda and BMW. Across the first seven months, hybrids accounted for 50.70% of all registrations, electric cars 13.44%, and thermal models 33.17%.
