Belgium and Luxembourg implement measures for drought and heatwaves

Authorities in Belgium and Luxembourg are responding to extreme weather conditions, including prolonged drought and heatwaves. In the Province of Namur, Belgium, police measures regarding drought and fire risks have been extended for a fourth time, remaining in effect until September 1, 2026. Despite slight improvements in weather forecasts, high soil moisture deficits and significant fire risks persist, exacerbated by ongoing large-scale fires in the Province of Liège.

In Luxembourg, the government is reviewing its national heatwave plan following a historic heatwave in June 2026. The plan, which saw a significant increase in registered participants this year, recorded over 4,700 contacts with beneficiaries during the June episode. Health Minister Martine Deprez noted that the number of registrations rose to 436 in 2026, partly due to early heat episodes in May and updated information databases. The government is currently considering expanding the plan to include more vulnerable individuals.
