Belgium and Luxembourg projected to face extreme heatwaves by 2050

Scientific projections for Belgium indicate that by 2050 summer temperatures could regularly reach the mid‑40s Celsius, with a Mediterranean‑type climate replacing the current oceanic pattern. Researchers cite a possible heatwave scenario of 42 °C in Brussels, 44 °C in Namur and 40 °C in Liège, and warn that such conditions may persist for weeks, turning heat events from short “sprints” into multi‑week “marathons.”

In Luxembourg, meteorologists have adopted the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) to assess heat stress, moving beyond simple air‑temperature thresholds. The new system incorporates humidity, wind, solar radiation and night‑time temperatures, and defines alert levels based on consecutive days of elevated stress. As climatologist Jürgen Junk explains, “A heat wave is a period of unusually high temperatures lasting several consecutive days,” and the updated approach aims to better gauge health impacts.

Both countries stress that stronger policy action now could moderate the severity of future heat extremes, highlighting the growing health and infrastructure risks posed by climate change.
