Belgium and Netherlands delay Eurovision participation decisions
Public broadcasters in Belgium and the Netherlands have requested extensions from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding their participation in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
Belgium’s VRT has postponed its decision following discussions with the EBU concerning participation rules and the involvement of Israel in the competition. VRT has questioned whether a country engaged in large-scale armed conflict should be permitted to participate and has called for greater transparency regarding the contest’s commitment to political neutrality. While rumors suggested that the French-speaking broadcaster RTBF might take over Belgium's participation if VRT withdraws, RTBF has denied these reports.
In the Netherlands, the NPO has also been granted additional time to decide on its entry. The NPO aims to provide more clarity by the end of the month, seeking financial and organizational certainty following the loss of a major sponsor.
