Belgium announces defense investments and drone aid for Ukraine

Belgium is implementing several defense modernization and aid initiatives. The Belgian government has allocated 8.4 million euros to acquire floating decoys for M-class frigates. These systems are designed to divert modern anti-ship missiles by simulating more attractive targets, addressing the inadequacy of existing protection systems installed in the 1980s. Additionally, 31.1 million euros has been approved to modernize military temporary housing, replacing obsolete tents with modern exoskeleton-type structures starting in 2026.

In a separate move to support Ukraine, the Belgian Ministry of Defense has awarded a contract worth approximately 47 million euros for the supply of V-BAT drone systems. The contract, awarded to Genk-based Stellar Ordnance, was conducted without a competitive bidding process due to the urgent necessity created by the ongoing conflict. The V-BAT drones, designed by the American group Anduril, are used for reconnaissance, intelligence, and target acquisition. These vertical take-off and landing systems feature enhanced engines and capabilities to counter data link jamming.
