Belgium authorities warn of rising phishing and impersonation scams

Authorities in Belgium are warning the public about increasingly sophisticated phishing emails and fraudulent phone calls. Criminals are using various methods to steal personal information, bank details, and money.

In digital scams, hackers send suspicious emails containing malicious links or urgent requests for payment. Users are advised to check URLs by hovering over links and to be wary of messages that use threatening language, such as claims that an account will be blocked. Official institutions will never request passwords or sensitive banking data via email, SMS, or WhatsApp.

Simultaneously, a wave of phone scams has been reported, particularly in the Mechelen, Willebroek, and Schoten regions. In these instances, fraudsters impersonate police inspectors to gain trust. They often warn victims about a supposed surge in local burglaries to justify asking questions about the presence of valuables, jewelry, or safes at home. This information is then used to facilitate theft or further financial fraud.
