Belgium avoids heatwave as temperatures drop below heatwave threshold

In Ukkel, Belgium, a maximum temperature of 29.1 °C was recorded, but the national heat‑wave criteria—five consecutive days of at least 25 °C with three days above 30 °C—were not met. Meteorologist David Dehenauw explained that only two days exceeded 30 °C, so the spell does not qualify as a heatwave.

Forecasters now expect temperatures to stay below 25 °C for the coming days, with light rain projected for Wednesday and possible local showers on Thursday. Bram Verbruggen noted, “We have the criteria for a heatwave just not met. There was one day with 29.9 °C, not 30 °C.” Expected highs range from 21 °C to 26 °C, accompanied by a north‑west wind.

The cooler forecast reduces health risks associated with prolonged heat, offering relief to residents who faced a warm period that fell short of official warnings.
