Belgium budget negotiations face tension over De Wever's 10 billion euro proposal
Tensions have risen within the Belgian federal government following Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s proposal for a 10 billion euro budget sanitization. The proposal has met significant resistance from Francophone coalition partners, specifically the MR and Les Engagés parties.
MR representative David Clarinval and Les Engagés leader Maxime Prévot have criticized the framework as ‘unbalanced.’ Clarinval argued that the plan focuses excessively on revenue generation rather than economic growth, while Prévot noted a lack of strategy for competitiveness and expressed concern over potential financial transfers to federated entities without consultation.
In a separate development regarding regional governance, Bertin Mampaka has been re-elected as the President of the Brussels Parliament. Mampaka emphasized the need for fiscal discipline within the regional assembly, noting that the parliament is already implementing savings equivalent to 10% of its 62 million euro annual budget.
Additionally, the Gezinsbond has voiced opposition to potential cuts to the ‘Groeipakket’ (child benefits) in Flanders, arguing that the program is a constitutional right for children and has already seen significant savings in previous legislatures.
