Harry Kane’s double sends England past DR Congo to Round of 16
England defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2–1 in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup in Atlanta. Congo took an early 7‑minute lead when Brian Cipenga scored. England equalised in the 75th minute when captain Harry Kane headed Anthony Gordon’s cross past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Kane completed the comeback four minutes later with a right‑footed strike, giving the Three Lions a 2–1 win.
Mpasi made several key saves for Congo, keeping the match close throughout the first half. Kane’s two goals brought his World Cup tally to 13, moving him past Pelé into joint sixth place on the all‑time tournament scoring list. With the victory, England advance to the round of 16 where they will face co‑host Mexico in Mexico City on 5 July.
