Belgium considers Italian FREMM EVO frigates amid Dutch programme delays

Belgium is considering Italy’s FREMM EVO frigates as an alternative to its joint naval procurement programme with the Netherlands. An internal Belgian Navy assessment indicates that the Italian-built design is a leading candidate to replace the country’s aging Karel Doorman-class frigates.

The original joint programme, led by Dutch shipbuilder Damen to produce anti-submarine warfare frigates, has faced significant delays and rising costs. The projected price per ship has reportedly increased from approximately €600 million to €1 billion. Delays are attributed to design complexities and the need for hull modifications to ensure future system integration.

In response to these setbacks, the Belgian Ministry of Defence has launched a market consultation focusing on rapid delivery. While France’s FDI and Spain’s F110 designs are also under consideration, the FREMM EVO is reportedly favored due to its anti-submarine capabilities, availability, and unique configuration featuring two hangars for NH90 helicopters and unmanned systems. The Belgian procurement could involve three frigates with a budget of roughly €3.2 billion and potential deliveries starting by 2030.
