Belgium defeats France 3-2 in field hockey World Cup opener

The Belgian men's national field hockey team, known as the Red Lions, opened their home World Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory against France at the Hockey Arena in Wavre.

France, led by former Belgian international John-John Dohmen, took an early lead through Eliot Curty in the 4th minute. Belgium equalized via Nelson Onana in the 18th minute, but France quickly regained the lead through Florent Vaal. The Belgian side eventually secured the win with goals from Roman Duvekot, following a penalty corner in the 45th minute, and Alexander Hendrickx in the 57th minute.

Following the match, Belgian goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch noted that the team struggled to find their rhythm in the first half but eventually regained their composure. Despite the loss, French coach Dohmen expressed pride in his team's tactical performance and ability to challenge the Belgian squad.

Belgium and Germany currently lead Group B. The Red Lions are scheduled to face defending champions Germany in their next match, while France must secure a win against Malaysia to maintain their tournament prospects.
