Belgium Defense Minister warns of Russian hybrid threats to Europe
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has warned that Europe faces a 'dark winter' characterized by increased Russian hybrid warfare. Speaking at a defense summit, Francken identified Russia as the primary security threat to Belgium, noting recent drone incidents that disrupted air traffic.
Francken emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defenses, increased production capacities, and the adoption of Ukrainian technology to counter Russian jet-powered drones. He noted that while Belgium was previously a low spender in NATO, the country has since doubled its defense spending, though he cautioned that reaching a 5 percent allocation of the UN budget is not realistic in the near term due to Belgium's high debt and challenging budget situation.
He further stressed that Europe must move faster to build industrial bases and maintain modern technological stockpiles to avoid the obsolescence of military equipment.
