Belgium detains researcher for suspected semiconductor espionage

Belgian federal prosecutors have detained a 52-year-old man with dual Belgian and Chinese nationality on suspicion of industrial espionage involving advanced semiconductor technology. The suspect, a former senior researcher at the Belgian company BelGaN, was arrested in May at Brussels Airport while attempting to travel to Beijing.

BelGaN, a manufacturer of gallium nitride semiconductors used in electric vehicles, aerospace, and military systems, declared bankruptcy in July 2024. Investigators allege the suspect was simultaneously serving as a director for a Chinese company that produces identical chips. This Chinese firm was established shortly after his employment at BelGaN and received funding from a Chinese investment fund.

The investigation focuses on the illegal transfer of specialized intellectual property and trade secrets. The suspect faces charges including industrial espionage, membership in a criminal organization, and misappropriation of company assets. Authorities have seized electronic communication equipment and data storage devices for analysis. A second suspect remains at large as the investigation continues.
