Belgium faces budget tensions and finalizes EU recovery fund request
Belgium is facing significant fiscal challenges as the government attempts to identify 10 billion euros in necessary savings. Prime Minister Bart De Wever has convened a third meeting of vice-prime ministers to address deep disagreements among the five coalition parties regarding budget cuts and revenue generation. While the N-VA has proposed a plan for 14 billion euros in savings, other parties, such as the MR and Les Engagés, have criticized the proposal for being unbalanced or relying too heavily on new taxes. The MR has submitted a counter-strategy focused on growth and competitiveness through tax relief.
In a separate development regarding national funding, the Belgian Council of Ministers has approved the final payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). This request seeks 1.381 billion euros in European grants and loans. These funds are earmarked for various sectors, including the defense fund, the Elia energy island project, public service digitalization, railway modernization, and marine nature restoration. This marks the completion of the Belgian recovery plan, which has distributed over 5.2 billion euros in total European funds.
