Belgium faces federal budget deadlock and regional fiscal uncertainty
Belgium is experiencing significant political and fiscal tension as federal budget negotiations stall. Party leaders are engaged in public disputes over austerity measures and tax reforms. N-VA leader Valerie Van Peel has defended a proposal to save 10 billion euros by shifting the tax burden from labor to consumption, including a VAT increase. Conversely, MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez has criticized this approach, arguing it unfairly targets the middle class under the guise of fiscal reform.
Simultaneously, questions have been raised regarding the Brussels regional budget. While the regional government claims it is on track for a balanced budget by 2029, the economic organization Voka has expressed skepticism. Concerns persist regarding the reliability of Brussels' accounting figures, noting that the Court of Audit has historically declined to evaluate the regional budget due to a lack of dependable data. Current regional efforts to manage finances include hiring freezes and administrative mergers, though the impact of federal budget decisions and rising interest rates remains uncertain.
