Belgium protests erupt over austerity and budget cuts

Massive protests and strikes have erupted across Belgium, primarily targeting the federal government’s proposed austerity measures and budget cuts. Major labor unions, including the FGTB and CSC, organized a nationwide strike to oppose measures such as potential VAT increases and changes to wage indexation. Tens of thousands of workers, students, and teachers participated in demonstrations, with estimates of participants ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 in Brussels alone.

While much of the union-led march was peaceful, violent clashes broke out near Brussels Central Station. Masked groups of young people reportedly threw stones, glass bottles, and fireworks at police, and set fire to shared bicycles and electric scooters. In response, riot police utilized water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Authorities reported over 100 arrests, including 13 minors.

In Liege, tensions have also escalated due to education-related budget cuts. The city has implemented a ban on gatherings of more than three people following incidents of vandalism and clashes between students and police. The unrest has caused significant disruptions to public transportation and air travel, including approximately 140 canceled flights in Brussels.
