Belgium fiscal experts urge scrutiny of taxes and subsidies
Experts are raising concerns regarding Belgium's fiscal management and the efficiency of government spending as the federal government prepares for new budget negotiations to reduce the national deficit.
Karel Anthonissen, former director of the Special Tax Inspection, highlighted Belgium's high level of para-fiscal pressure, noting the significant burden of taxes and social contributions. He also expressed support for wealth taxes.
Economist and Ghent University professor Gert Peersman argued for a more critical evaluation of government subsidies. Peersman noted that while billions are spent annually on sectors such as mobility, climate, and social initiatives, these expenditures must be assessed for their actual contribution to economic and societal goals. He expressed skepticism toward subsidies, suggesting they can distort market competition and reduce economic efficiency.
