Belgium heatwave advice: keep homes cooler and prevent heatstroke

During a heatwave, Belgian residents are advised to keep windows, curtains and blinds closed while outdoor temperatures exceed indoor levels, as warm air can quickly turn homes into ovens. Shading windows with external blinds or screens is the most effective way to block solar heat before it reaches the glass.

Ventilation should be done at night or early morning when the outside air is cooler; opening multiple windows opposite each other creates a natural airflow that removes accumulated heat. Fans can improve comfort by moving air over the skin, while air‑conditioners should be set only a few degrees below the outdoor temperature to save energy.

To reduce internal heat sources, limit the use of appliances such as ovens, dryers and computers during the hottest part of the day, choose lighter meals, and switch off unnecessary lighting, especially halogen bulbs. For personal safety, drink plenty of water, stay out of direct sun, avoid heavy physical exertion and alcohol, and be alert for signs of heatstroke.
