Belgium heatwave drives push for circular construction practices

Belgium has endured an unprecedented heat wave and severe storms, prompting criticism from opposition politicians. They accused Prime Minister Bart De Wever of remaining silent on the crisis, with Sarah Schlitz calling the lack of response “a scandal” and urging clear government action and coordination.

Researchers at Odisee University, together with VUB Architectural Engineering, launched the website circularbuildingdetails.be. The platform lets architects, contractors and owners compare building solutions for roofs, façades, floors and connections on circularity, cost and environmental impact. “The most sustainable brick is the brick you don’t have to produce again,” explained researcher Filip Van Langenhove, emphasizing bio‑based and recycled materials and designs that allow buildings to be repurposed rather than demolished.

Climate and Mobility Minister Jean‑Luc Crucke highlighted the need for a coordinated national response to extreme weather, stating that Belgium must work together to become more resilient to climate‑change impacts.
