Belgium highlights mental health care during Mental Health Week
During Mental Health Week in Brussels and the Open Geestdagen weekend, various Belgian organizations are highlighting different approaches to psychological care.
In Brussels, the Bru-Stars network utilizes mobile psychiatric teams to reach children and young adults up to age 23. Rather than waiting for patients to seek help, these teams visit schools, nurseries, and homes to support those unable to access traditional care due to anxiety or depression. This mobile approach also involves working closely with parents and families to address household dynamics.
In Geel, OPZ Geel is hosting a public day to showcase the diversity of mental health services. The event features campus quests, historical walks, and film programs. A central focus is the Geelse Gezinsverpleging, a unique care tradition spanning over 750 years where families integrate individuals with psychological vulnerabilities into their daily lives with professional support. This practice was recognized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2023.
