Belgium increases dormant account threshold to 250 euros

As of September 1, the threshold for dormant assets in Belgium has been increased to 250 euros. Accounts that have seen no activity for five years with balances below this new minimum will be transferred directly to the state treasury.

Previously, banks were required to search for account holders; if unsuccessful, funds were transferred to the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC). Once at the CDC, a five-year prescription period applies, after which the money belongs to the public treasury. This prescription period was recently reduced from thirty years to five years. Small amounts transferred to the CDC are subject to immediate transfer to the state, as no prescription period applies to them.
