Belgium security chief links Iran to terror attacks in Liège and Antwerp
Belgium’s head of threat analysis, Gert Vercauteren, has identified Iran as the director behind two terror attacks targeting Jewish sites in the country in March 2026. The incidents included an explosive device detonating outside a synagogue in Liège and an arson attack on a vehicle in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter.
Vercauteren stated that these attacks were part of a coordinated campaign rather than isolated acts. He noted that similar threats were detected in the Netherlands, where intelligence services successfully thwarted a planned bombing of a synagogue in Heemstede.
A key suspect linked to the European network was recently arrested in Turkey. While no injuries were reported in the Belgian attacks, Israeli Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, David Saranga, called on European nations to adjust their policies toward Iran to address the security threats posed on European streets.
