Belgium investigates TripRank app over road safety concerns

Belgium's Federal Minister of Mobility, Jean-Luc Crucke, has launched an investigation into the driving application TripRank due to concerns regarding road safety. The app functions as a comprehensive trip and driving tracker, using smartphone GPS to record distance, duration, route, speed, acceleration, braking, and G-forces.

While TripRank’s terms of use explicitly prohibit reckless driving and urban rodeos, critics argue the app’s ranking system incentivizes dangerous behavior. Users earn more points for higher speeds, meaning a driver reaching 250 km/h can achieve a “very good score” on their profile.

The federal police and the road safety institute Vias have warned that the platform encourages hazardous driving. Minister Crucke is currently analyzing the situation alongside judicial partners to determine if a ban on the application in Belgium is necessary.
