Belgium mosquito populations rise following rainfall

Recent rainfall in Belgium following a dry period has created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Researcher Eduard Peter de Boer notes that while the previous drought limited populations, the availability of water allows the insect life cycle to resume rapidly.

Experts and Sciensano advise residents to eliminate standing water in items such as buckets, flowerpots, and rain barrels to prevent larvae from maturing into adults, a process that can take approximately two weeks. August and September are identified as critical months for mosquito activity, which may persist if weather remains warm and humid.

Beyond nuisance, Sciensano is monitoring the spread of exotic species like the Asian tiger mosquito in Belgium. This species has the potential to transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika under certain conditions.
