Iran decries unfair treatment after 1‑1 World Cup draw with Egypt in Seattle
Iran and Egypt played to a 1‑1 stalemate in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Egypt opened the scoring early, while Iran equalised minutes later. In stoppage time Iran appeared to win after a goal by Shoja Khalilzadeh, but the Video Assistant Referee ruled the striker offside, nullifying the winner.
Following the match Iran’s coach Amir Ghalenoei said the team had been "treated very unfairly" by the United States, urging FIFA to intervene. Team captain Mehdi Taremi called the tournament “a disaster” and criticised the logistical hurdles his squad faced, including a mid‑tournament relocation of the training base from Arizona to Tijuana, repeated visa restrictions and the inability to stay in the United States between matches.
The game coincided with Seattle’s Pride Weekend, and despite protests from the Iranian and Egyptian football federations, the organizers allowed rainbow flags inside the stadium, dubbing the fixture the “Pride match.” Iran left a handwritten note in the locker room highlighting their honor‑first philosophy and thanking the city for its hospitality.
Egypt, already assured of a round‑of‑32 spot, will meet Australia next, while Iran must rely on being one of the eight best third‑placed teams to advance.
