Belgium on the brink of fiscal collapse as public spending spirals and confidence falls

Government leader Georges‑Louis Bouchez told RTL on 4 June that Belgium is near bankruptcy and urged immediate cuts to public structures rather than new taxes. He highlighted that public expenditure already accounts for 55 % of GDP, making the country one of the most heavily taxed in Europe, and called for more employment and growth‑focused policies. Bouchez also said the MR will not raise VAT and stressed the need for additional teachers without layoffs.

A RTL‑commissioned poll released on 6 June revealed that 70 % of French‑speaking Belgians doubt the political system’s ability to maintain financial stability over the next five years. Trust varies by party, with the MR at 57 % and the PTB at only 2 %. Despite the lack of confidence, only 19 % would consider leaving the country if the economy worsened, indicating concern but limited intent to emigrate.
