Belgium records record number of criminal deportations in 2026

Belgium has recorded a record number of deportations in 2026, forcibly returning 1,239 criminals to their home countries. These individuals had completed prison sentences and lacked valid residency permits. This figure surpasses the previous record of 1,112 set in 2017.

The most frequent nationalities among those deported include Moroccans (233), Albanians (195), and Algerians (138).

Minister of Justice Vincent Van Bossuyt attributed the increase to improved political priorities, better cooperation between the justice department and immigration services, and increased resource investment. The government has also utilized formal return agreements, such as one established with Algeria in April, to facilitate these processes. However, local officials, including the acting mayor of Schaerbeek, have criticized the government's effectiveness in managing undocumented individuals within specific municipalities.
