Belgium sees 38.6% rise in healthcare proxies

The number of healthcare proxies in Belgium increased by 38.6 percent during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to Fednot. A total of 92,026 mandates were signed.

This trend is most prominent in Flanders, which accounted for 91 percent of the total with 83,787 mandates. Growth was also recorded in Brussels and Wallonia, with increases of 24.9 percent and 23.4 percent, respectively.

Healthcare proxies allow individuals to designate specific persons to manage financial affairs, such as bank accounts, bills, and pensions, as well as long-term care preferences in the event they become mentally incapacitated due to illness or accident. New legislation scheduled for 2027 will limit the role of estate managers to registered professionals or close family members.
