Belgium struggles with rising nitrous oxide use

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has become a widespread recreational drug in Belgium, presenting significant challenges for authorities regarding public health and environmental impact.

Despite a ban on recreational use, sale, and possession implemented two years ago, the gas remains accessible. It is often marketed as a party accessory, sold in brightly colored cylinders with sweet flavors and offered via home delivery. Consumption is prevalent in nightclubs, festivals, parks, and private parties.

Health experts and police officials have raised alarms over the substance's effects. Deborah Apelmaen, commissioner of the Brussels-Midi police zone, noted that users can lose contact with reality for 10 to 30 seconds, creating severe risks for those driving. Fred Laudens of the Flemish Expert Center on Alcohol and Other Drugs warned that excessive use can lead to psychological dependence, nerve damage, vitamin B12 deficiency, and even paralysis. Additionally, inhaling directly from cylinders can cause severe frostbite.
