Belgium to allow retailers to open seven days a week from August 13

Starting August 13, Belgian retailers will gain the legal freedom to open seven days a week following the abolition of the mandatory weekly rest day. This federal legislation, published in the Belgian Official Gazette, allows shops to choose their own opening days and hours, with standard operating windows potentially extending from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Despite the increased flexibility, several practical challenges remain. Current labor laws have not been simultaneously updated, meaning that in most cases, it remains illegal to employ staff on Sunday afternoons, except in designated tourist zones like Genk and Maasmechelen. Furthermore, some retailers may opt to remain closed due to staffing shortages.

Experts suggest the most immediate impact may be felt on Mondays. Previously, the requirement for a continuous 24-hour rest period often forced shops to remain closed from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. Small local supermarkets are expected to utilize the new rules to open earlier on Monday mornings to compete with larger chains.
