Belgium to implement remote dermatology tele-expertise

Starting September 1, 2026, general practitioners in Belgium will be able to request remote dermatological expertise for patients with skin lesions. This new procedure, established by a royal decree, allows a general practitioner to submit clinical questions to a dermatologist via secure communication channels to obtain a diagnosis or treatment proposal.

According to INAMI, a pilot project indicated that this system could improve access to specialized expertise, support primary care, and reduce unnecessary patient referrals and travel. However, the GBO has expressed concerns regarding the lack of remuneration for the work performed by the general practitioner during this process.
