Belgium to introduce mandatory digital road vignette in 2027

From 1 May 2027 Belgium will require a digital road vignette linked to the vehicle’s licence plate for all light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using motorways and regional roads. The vignette applies to both Belgian‑registered and foreign‑registered vehicles; only local (communal) roads are exempt.

Pricing will be tiered by CO₂ emissions: €90 per year for electric or zero‑emission cars, €100 for recent Euro 4‑plus gasoline vehicles, and €125 for older models. Short‑term options (one‑day, 10‑day and monthly) will also be offered, with daily rates ranging from €8.10 to €11.25. The system will be common to Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels and sold through an official website starting 1 March 2027, eliminating the need for physical stickers. The policy aims to have all road users, including foreign drivers, contribute equitably to the maintenance of Belgium’s heavily used road network.
