Belgium urges pet owners to protect animals from heatwave

Belgian officials and veterinary experts warned residents that the ongoing heatwave poses serious risks to dogs and cats. At a June 17 conference in Auderghem, Dr. Jean‑François Foubert outlined key precautions for keeping pets safe during extreme temperatures, emphasizing the need to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to ensure adequate hydration.

Veterinarian Anne‑Laure Brami, speaking on Sud Radio, highlighted that pets sweat little and have higher normal body temperatures, making them vulnerable to heatstroke. She advised owners to "ne pas laisser son animal au soleil, même pas 5 minutes" and to schedule walks early in the morning or late in the evening. Signs of overheating include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy; immediate cooling with lukewarm water and veterinary care are recommended.

Both experts stressed that while cats may cope slightly better indoors, they remain at risk, particularly to ear burns and cardiac strain. The guidance aims to prevent severe organ damage or death among companion animals as temperatures continue to break records across Belgium.
