Belgium wage statistics and indexation changes

Recent data provides insight into the Belgian wage landscape and upcoming changes to automatic wage indexation. According to the Jobat Salary Compass 2025, the average gross monthly salary in Belgium is €4,420, with a median salary of €4,000. Older official data from Statbel reported an average gross monthly wage of €4,076 for full-time employees, with a median of €3,728.

Regarding purchasing power, a measure known as the ‘centenindex’ will temporarily alter how wages, pensions, and benefits are indexed to inflation. This measure caps indexation for higher incomes rather than acting as a direct tax. For employees, the cap is set at a gross monthly salary of €4,000. For pensions and social benefits, the threshold is €2,000 gross per month.

Individuals earning below these thresholds will continue to receive standard indexation. Those earning above the limits will receive less of an increase than they would under the normal system. The cap applies to fixed gross salaries; variable compensation such as bonuses, overtime, and meal vouchers is typically excluded from this calculation.
