Belgium wealth report shows high concentration among top 10 percent

Recent data from the National Bank of Belgium reveals significant wealth concentration within the country. The top 10 percent of Belgian households hold approximately 54.4 percent of the nation's total net wealth, which was valued at 3.145 trillion euros in the first quarter of 2026. To be considered part of this elite group, a household must possess a minimum net wealth of 1.16 million euros, compared to the national average of 610,000 euros.

While wealth inequality in Belgium has seen a slight increase, with the Gini coefficient rising from 68.5 percent to 68.8 percent, the country remains more equitable than the broader eurozone, which holds a coefficient of 73.1 percent.

In terms of individual wealth, Françoise Chombar has been identified as one of Belgium's wealthiest women, with an estimated fortune of 869.25 million euros. Chombar, the former CEO of Melexis, holds a 50 percent stake in the Xtrion group alongside Rudi De Winter.
