Belgium welfare data shows rising living wage recipients

Data released for the first four months of 2026 indicates a significant increase in individuals transitioning from unemployment or integration benefits to the living wage (leefloon) following welfare reforms.

According to figures requested by MP Ellen Samyn from Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt, 29,839 people entered the living wage system during this period. There is a stark regional disparity in these figures: Brussels and Wallonia combined accounted for 24,602 new recipients, while Flanders saw an increase of 5,066 people.

Specifically, Wallonia experienced the highest growth with 17,060 new recipients, a 20.8 percent increase. Brussels saw 7,542 new recipients, representing a 16 percent rise, whereas Flanders recorded a 9.7 percent increase.
