Belgium's summer heat to persist with further spikes, forecasts warn

European and U.S. weather models indicate that Belgium will experience additional heat spikes for the remainder of the summer. The ECMWF model projects temperatures 1 – 2.5 °C above the long‑term average for July, driven by a strong high‑pressure ridge over Central Europe, while the NCEP model foresees a similarly warm August despite a slight moderation in drought signals. Meteorologists cite a dry soil surface that amplifies warming and a surrounding Atlantic “cold blob” that steers subtropical air from Spain and North Africa into the Benelux region.

Meteorologist Ruben Weytjens warned that a further heatwave in August or even September is not ruled out, describing such an event as “hard to imagine.” He linked the increasing frequency of extreme heat to accelerating climate change, noting that hotter periods are becoming longer and more intense. Both sources suggest that while extreme temperatures may continue, the character of late‑summer heat could shift toward humid, thunderstorm‑laden conditions as the warmed North Sea fuels convective storms.
